Satire, Sarcasm, and People Who Don't Get It
Dear Self,
It was another strange and disturbing day today.
I made this satirical post on social media yesterday about opening a job for a wife. In the post, I had joked about the relationship not having any intimacy and that the required skills would include driving and a couple of chores. Obviously, this is a joke and most people got the context of it - I, basically, don't want to get married, and, at the same time, don't know any household chores. So it was a funny way of displaying it.
Unfortunately, not everyone found it funny. One person on my list was actually offended and couldn't see that it was just a joke. I eventually decided to put down the post to avoid any further discussion. Also, her comment made several of my friends angry at her. In other words, what started as a funny, nonsensical post spiraled into negativity.
I guess a good realization here is that sometimes, even if it wasn't your intention, people tend to interpret things differently. And sometimes, these happen in ways that you never even thought of. Society is complex, individual thoughts are hard to predict. Especially during these times when everyone tends to be overly sensitive about every issue - feminism, LGBTQ, race, religion. Just a slight misstep and you may get crucified.
Incidentally, I saw in the news today that the celebrity, Justin Timberlake, is being called out on social media for a joke he said about 24-hour parenting. Everyone knows that he was just joking about 24-hour parenting not being human; but, again, we have overly sensitive people criticizing him for the comment and saying that he has no right to complain with his millions of dollars.
Gosh, people have to take a chill pill.
Sincerely,
Lagundi
